Three-dimensional elastic and relaxation response of the medial collateral ligament

Abstract. The incidence of ligament ruptures has been on the rise in developed countries and the most common intervention for these ruptures is surgical reconstruction. Yet, the medical community has not reached a consensus on the optimal repair technique. Computational models offer an efficient method to evaluate different surgical techniques and graft materials. This study develops a novel model which describes the three-dimensional relaxation behavior of ligaments and is formulated within the anisotropic formulation of the Pipkin-Rogers integral [2]. Published multi-axial experimental data on the relaxation behavior of human medial collateral ligaments (MCLs) [1] are used to validate the proposed model.
