Biomechanics of the ATAA: A local analysis using multiphoton microscopy, bulge inflation testing, and full field measurements

Abstract. Ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (ATAAs) are a ballooning in the portion of the aorta before the arch. Untreated ATAAs may rupture or dissect. However little is known about the rupture mechanisms of ATAAs. In this study, we characterize the local stress distribution and local distribution of mechanical properties in ATAAs using bulge inflation tests coupled with full-field displacement measurements. In addition, the bulge inflation experiments are accompanied by a multi-photon microscopy study to examine the role of collagen fibers in the rupture response.
